On September 4th, 2024, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) published the Monthly Unemployment (MU) figures for August, 2024. The Monthly Unemployment figures are estimated using trends in the Live Register figures based on data from the Labour Force Survey (LFS), and are subject to revision. The Labour Force Survey is published on a quarterly basis by the CSO and provides the official employment and unemployment figures.

According to the latest Monthly Unemployment figures, 124,600 people were unemployed in August, 2024, an increase of 3% on August, 2023. The Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) was 4.3%, the same rate as a year ago. 4,100 more women were unemployed in August 2024, but 500 fewer men than in August, 2023. The Monthly Unemployment Rate for men decreased by 0.2 percentage points to 4.3%, but increased for women by 0.1 percentage points to 4.3%. Women accounted for 47% of the unemployed in August, 2024, a rise of 2 percentage points over the year.

In August, 2024, 39,000 people aged 15-24 were unemployed, the same figure as August, 2023. Their MUR was 10.7%, 0.2 percentage points lower than a year ago. Over the year, unemployment amongst young men increased by 10% to 22,000, and their unemployment rate was 11.5%, an increase of 0.5 percentage points over the year. Unemployment amongst young women decreased by 10% to 17,000, while their unemployment rate dropped by 0.9 percentage points to 9.8%. In August, 2024, women accounted for 44% of those unemployed in this age category, a decrease of five percentage points over the year.

The Monthly Unemployment figure for people aged 25-74 was 85,600, in August 2024, a 4.4% increase over the year. The Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) was 3.4% in August 2024, the same rate as a year ago. In this age category unemployment decreased for men by 5.4% to 43,500, while their MUR declined by 0.3 percentage points to 3.3%. Unemployment increased for women by 17% to 42,100 women and their Monthly Unemployment Rate (MUR) rose by 0.5 percentage points to 3.6%. Women accounted for 49% of those unemployed in this age category in August, 2024, an increase of 5 percentage points over the year.
